DiagnosticsReview Of CPD Records Goes Live - Royal Pharmaceutical Society Of Great Britain
The routine call and review of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) records will begin
on 27 July 2009 the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain has announced today.
This
last stage in the implementation of CPD to the profession means that the Society will routinely
ask practising pharmacists and registered practising pharmacy technicians to submit their
records for review and feedback.
The introduction of regular call and review is associated with the publication in March of new
CPD standards and guidance, under the Code of Ethics for Pharmacists and Pharmacy
Technicians. Its implementation follows two successful pilots involving over 1,000 pharmacists
and pharmacy technicians.
Janet Flint, the Society"s CPD Lead and Head of Support Staff Regulation said: "Call and
review has been launched by the Society to prepare pharmacists and pharmacy technicians
for the introduction of statutory CPD in 2010, when the General Pharmaceutical Council
(GPhC) is established. It is hoped that the new system will encourage engagement and help to
address any difficulties registrants might have with their CPD record keeping.
"The Society will provide a supportive and facilitative approach and registrants will be provided
with relevant tools to undergo the robust review process."
The Society"s CPD standards require registrants to keep a record of their CPD either online at
the Society"s CPD website, on their PC via the desktop program or on paper using the
Society"s published or approved format. Registrants are required to make a minimum of nine
entries per year from 1 March 2009.
If requested, registrants must submit their record within six weeks, advising the Society in
advance if they are unable to meet the deadline. Registrants will receive feedback on their
entries within eight weeks.
Notes
The Society"s Council agreed that CPD records should be maintained and reviewed under the
Code of Ethics in April 2008 and the standards and guidance were approved after a 12-week
consultation in February 2009.
CPD recording and review is mandatory under the Code of Ethics for pharmacists and
pharmacy technicians until statutory arrangements are made by the GPhC in 2010.
