A specific biomarker, a protein released by dying tumor cells, has been identified as an effective tool in an animal model to gauge the response to a novel gene therapy treatment for glioblastoma mulitforme. The finding, reported in the July 1 issue of Clinical Cancer Research, paves the way for a Phase 1 clinical trial expected to begin in late 2009.

FDA Officials Discuss Overhauling Agency In NEJM Perspective

"The FDA as a Public Health Agency," New England Journal of Medicine: In the perspective, FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg and Joshua Sharfstein, principal deputy commissioner of the agency, provide "a broad overview" of how they plan to "embrace" the agency"s mission to protect the public"s health. Hamburg and Sharfstein discuss their plans to work with other U.S. agencies, such as NIH, CDC and CMS, as well as challenges posed by globalization.
